As a photographer, there’s one thing we can’t control: the weather. Sometimes, rain comes in unexpectedly, especially in the South, and the long planned outdoor photo session takes a turn.
Recently, I had a family photo session that was all set at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. But as the day approached, the forecast turned, and rain became inevitable. Instead of rescheduling, we decided to brave the weather and move indoors in their greenhouse. The Metcalf's actually had their engagement portraits taken there, so this added as extra layer of sentiment to David's 6 month portraits.
As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the warm, humid air and the vibrant, lush greenery that surrounded us. The space was alive with the rich textures of leaves, flowers, and vines, all thriving under the shelter of glass. The greenhouse felt comfortable and private, as the grey clothes and rain kept most people indoors. The best feature of the greenhouse is the apperance of the outdoors; one would never know it was dark and rainy while looking through the portraits.
While most of the time I'd certainly prefer sunny or even cloudy weather, it's nice to stretch our options a bit and embrace what the day brings. It’s a great reminder to embrace the unexpected and to find beauty in the small, unplanned moments.
If you’re worried about rain on the day of your photo session, don’t be. There are always alternatives that can turn a potential setback into something extraordinary. Whether it’s a cozy indoor setting, a bright greenhouse, or even a rain-soaked downtown adventure, each location brings its own charm. The key is to stay flexible, keep an open mind, and trust that, together, we’ll capture the magic of your day—rain or shine. Now let's focus on the real star of the session, the sunshine boy himself, David!
